Engaging Family Histories: Students + Parents

I’m pretty obsessed with my own family history and I seem to gravitate towards art projects that provide students with an opportunity to explore their own histories. I think this creates meaningful art work for students. In this special Saturday project, parents and students worked together to create a “Family Map”.

For the warm-up, they make a list of everyone in their family (even if they had passed away). Next they made mini portraits and composed them on a paper that is meant to stand in a V shape. We had 1 hour and 15 minutes to work. With more time, I can imagine the project going in several different directions.
